A complete advanced IHM Academy module built around the tactical principles used in modern high-level hockey. This programme covers offensive-zone structure, forechecking systems, neutral-zone organisation, transition play, puck support, pressure management, special teams concepts and the tactical decisions that connect every phase of the game.
Each lesson goes beyond basic systems diagrams. The focus is on understanding why structures work, how players read pressure, how units move together, where numerical advantages are created and how coaches can adjust systems during real game situations.
The module is developed in the signature coaching style of Coach Mark Lehtonen for the IHM Academy, combining professional coaching principles with practical Hockey Intelligence for players, coaches and serious students of the game.
From controlled offensive-zone possession and layered forechecks to neutral-zone traps, counter-attacks, breakouts and special teams structure, the objective is simple: help you understand hockey as a connected tactical system, rather than a collection of isolated plays.

Who Is This Module For?
This module is designed for hockey players, coaches, developing coaches, parents supporting advanced players and anyone who wants to understand the tactical side of the game beyond basic positioning.
The lessons are written so that developing players can understand the core principles while experienced players and coaches can explore the deeper tactical details behind each system.
Coach Mark Q&A
Do players need to memorise every system?
No. The most important skill is understanding the principles behind the system. Structures can change from team to team, but concepts such as support, spacing, pressure, numerical advantage and defensive responsibility remain constant.
What separates an elite forecheck from an aggressive forecheck?
Organisation. Elite forechecking is not simply skating hard towards the puck. Every player has a responsibility, pressure is triggered at the correct moment and the supporting players remove the opponent’s most effective options.
Why is the neutral zone so important in modern hockey?
Because many games are decided before the puck reaches the offensive zone. Strong neutral-zone structure can deny controlled entries, force turnovers and immediately create transition opportunities in the opposite direction.
Should younger players study advanced tactical systems?
Yes, provided the principles are taught progressively. Young players should first understand support, spacing, scanning and decision-making. More complex structures can then be added without replacing creativity and individual skill.
Can the same offensive system work against every opponent?
No. Good teams maintain core principles but adapt details according to the opponent’s pressure, defensive structure, personnel and game situation. Tactical intelligence includes recognising when the original plan needs to change.
The IHM Academy Approach
IHM Academy is built to explain hockey from the inside out. Our goal is not simply to show where players should stand, but to explain the reads, decisions and tactical relationships that determine what happens next.
