Canadiens 4, Jets 5: Winnipeg’s remarkable OT rescue

Match date: 4 November 2026.

Final score: Canadiens 4, Jets 5.

The Jets turned a four-goal third-period deficit into a 5-4 overtime win over the Canadiens on 4 November, completing an extraordinary late rescue in Montreal. D. Samberg settled it 3:30 into overtime after K. Connor had scored twice in the final minute of regulation to force the extra period.

Game Story

Canadiens looked firmly in control for most of the night. O. Beck opened the scoring at 3:05 of the first period, finishing a play assisted by F. Xhekaj and A. Xhekaj, before J. Anderson made it 2-0 at 18:18 with C. Kreider and K. Guhle supplying the assists.

C. Caufield extended the lead at 4:00 of the second, assisted by N. Dobson and J. Slafkovský. The same scorer struck again 46 seconds into the third period, with L. Hutson and J. Slafkovský involved, to give the Canadiens a 4-0 advantage.

The Jets' response arrived late, but it was relentless. T. Bauer began the recovery at 17:21, converting assists from C. Koepke and D. DeMelo. M. Barron followed 42 seconds later, with Bauer and DeMelo earning the assists, and K. Connor cut the gap to one at 19:00 from M. Scheifele's pass.

There was barely time for Montreal to regain its bearings. Connor scored again at 19:27, assisted by Scheifele and Barron, levelling the contest at 4-4 with 33 seconds left in regulation.

Overtime lasted only 3:30. D. Samberg scored the winner for Winnipeg, with A. Lowry and G. Vilardi providing the assists, to complete a comeback from 4-0 down.

Turning Point

K. Connor's equaliser at 19:27 of the third period changed the entire shape of the night. His first goal had made it 4-3 only 27 seconds earlier; his second wiped out a Canadiens lead that had stood at four goals less than three minutes before the end of regulation.

Standout Performers

K. Connor supplied the finish the Jets needed, scoring twice in 27 seconds late in the third period to erase the final two goals of the deficit. M. Barron had a goal and an assist, while T. Bauer also recorded a goal and an assist as Winnipeg's comeback gathered speed.

C. Caufield scored twice for the Canadiens, and J. Slafkovský assisted on both of those goals. J. Fowler faced 47 shots and made 42 saves for Montreal, but Winnipeg's late volume eventually overturned the home side's commanding position.

Tactical Observations

The shot count, 47-22 in Winnipeg's favour, provides the clearest indication of the pressure the Canadiens had absorbed before the late collapse. Montreal made its 22 shots count efficiently for more than 40 minutes, building a 4-0 lead despite being heavily outshot.

Once Bauer put the Jets on the board, the game became about score management rather than the earlier balance of play. Winnipeg produced four goals in the final 2:39 of regulation, including three in the final minute. The Canadiens could not find a stoppage in the scoring sequence, while the Jets carried their momentum straight into overtime.

Coach Mark Comment

A 4-0 game asks different questions of a bench than a one-goal game, because the danger is assuming the hard work has already been done. Then Bauer scores, Barron scores, and suddenly Connor's first goal at 19:00 makes every puck touch feel urgent. The penalty at 19:25 left Montreal with almost no margin to settle things, and Connor's equaliser arrived two seconds later. That is a brutal little stretch for any team trying to protect a result: not a whole period going wrong, just a few minutes in which the clock stops being your friend.

What It Means

The Jets ended a losing streak of at least five games in the most dramatic fashion possible, recovering from a four-goal hole and taking the overtime winner. For the Canadiens, four goals from O. Beck, J. Anderson and C. Caufield were not enough to secure a result after the late barrage.

What Comes Next

Winnipeg will look to carry the confidence of a four-goal comeback into its next outing. Montreal must address how a 4-0 third-period lead became a tied game before overtime began.
