NHL IN 60 SECONDS
Nashville’s week carries several threads: Shane Wright has arrived from Seattle in exchange for Matthew Wood, while Steven Stamkos says consistency and defending better are central to the Predators’ push to become a genuine playoff contender. Jacob Fowler’s seven-start winning streak earned the Montreal goalie October’s rookie honour, and Winnipeg’s nine-game skid has put the focus on execution and defending. Elsewhere, the Islanders and the Schaefer family have opened a child support room in Jennifer Schaefer’s memory. Connor Hellebuyck has started 2-0-0 with New Jersey, while Tage Thompson, Tristan Jarry and Leo Carlsson were recognised among the week’s leading performers.
THE BIG FIVE
Vanderklok reflects on Rinne’s lasting influence
Ben Vanderklok says Pekka Rinne’s stature reaches far beyond his accomplishments in goal. The Nashville goaltending coach first worked with Rinne in 2014, when Rinne was already the Predators’ established No. 1. Their relationship continued through Rinne’s retirement after the 2020-21 season and now extends across the club’s goaltending department, where Rinne is European development coach and scout. Vanderklok will attend Rinne’s Hockey Hall of Fame induction on Monday. He described Rinne as deeply engaged from their first conversation and said the former goalie asked him to act as his eyes and ears in helping his game. Vanderklok believes Rinne’s humility, respect and the way he made people feel define his greatness as much as his on-ice record.
IHM Signal: Rinne’s Hall of Fame moment is presented as a recognition of both achievement and enduring personal impact.
Coach Mark: The lasting trust between goalie and coach shows how shared detail and clear communication can strengthen a working partnership over time.

Predators acquire Wright in trade with Kraken
The Nashville Predators have acquired centre Shane Wright from the Seattle Kraken for forward Matthew Wood. Wright, selected No. 4 in the 2022 NHL Draft, has four points, including three goals, in 14 games this season. The 22-year-old has played 183 NHL games and recorded 82 points, with 39 goals and 43 assists. Nashville general manager Chris MacFarland said the club expects Wright to add a strong two-way game and pace to its forward group, while believing he can continue to grow. Wood leaves Nashville after posting three points in 14 games this season. Seattle general manager Jason Botterill highlighted Wood’s reach, ability to protect pucks, shot and hockey sense, while saying there is room for him to add strength to his body and frame.
IHM Signal: The deal swaps two young forwards selected in the first round, with each club identifying specific elements it values.
Coach Mark: Nashville’s stated emphasis on Wright’s two-way play and pace points to a fit based on reliable play at both ends of the ice.

Fowler takes October rookie honour after seven straight wins
Montreal Canadiens goalie Jacob Fowler has been named the NHL Rookie of the Month for October after winning seven consecutive starts. The 21-year-old leads rookie goalies with a 7-1-0 record, a 1.84 goals-against average, two shutouts and a .932 save percentage through eight games, all starts. He made an NHL career-high 46 saves, including 24 in the third period, in a 2-0 win against the St. Louis Blues on Oct. 27. Fowler also made 33 saves in a 2-1 Heritage Classic victory against Winnipeg on Oct. 25. Toronto forward Gavin McKenna is tied for the rookie lead with 11 points in 16 games, while Washington defenceman Cole Hutson leads rookie defencemen with eight points and averages 19:08 of ice time.
IHM Signal: Fowler’s winning streak is backed by leading rookie-goalie figures in wins, goals-against average, shutouts and save percentage.
Coach Mark: Fowler’s ability to limit goals while handling a 46-save outing suggests a rookie who has delivered when the workload has risen.
Arniel focuses on execution as Jets lose ninth straight
Winnipeg Jets coach Scott Arniel says he is not concerned about his job security after a ninth consecutive defeat, a 7-0 loss at the Carolina Hurricanes. The Jets are 0-7-2 during the slide and 4-8-3 overall. Arniel said his task is to prepare the players and stressed that the group must defend, compete and execute better. Winnipeg allowed four goals in 7:14 during the second period, and starting goalie Stuart Skinner was removed after giving up five goals on 17 shots. Captain Adam Lowry said players must take responsibility for carrying out the game plan, adding that the team has not put together a full 60-minute performance often enough. Winnipeg was scheduled to finish its four-game road trip at Montreal on Tuesday.
IHM Signal: Arniel and Lowry both frame Winnipeg’s problem around collective execution rather than a lack of instruction.
Coach Mark: The emphasis on defending first and sustaining a full game identifies the basic habits Winnipeg says it must restore before results can change.

Schaefer family opens child support room in Jennifer’s memory
New York Islanders defenceman Matthew Schaefer and his family have helped open the Jennifer Schaefer Child Support Room at the R.J. Zuckerberg Cancer Center. The room honours Schaefer’s late mother, Jennifer, who died from breast cancer in February 2024. A $150,000 donation from the Islanders Children’s Foundation helped bring the dedicated space to life for children while their parents undergo cancer treatment. The hockey-themed room includes Islanders memorabilia, air hockey, bubble hockey and gaming consoles. Schaefer, who was 16 when his mother died, said his family had wanted to create something for children and families facing difficult hospital visits. His father, Todd, said the room was exactly what his wife would have wanted.
IHM Signal: The room gives children a dedicated place for activity and respite while a parent receives treatment.
Coach Mark: By centring a child-friendly space within a treatment setting, the project recognises the importance of support for the whole family.
