THE BIG FIVE

Tkachuk prepares for emotional Ottawa return

Brady Tkachuk will return to Ottawa on Wednesday when the Florida Panthers visit the Senators at Canadian Tire Centre. The former Senators captain spent eight seasons in Canada’s capital, including five as captain, before requesting a trade after last season in order to play with his brother Matthew in Florida. Ottawa received three first-round picks in the trade, two in 2026 and a conditional selection in 2029, plus a second-round pick in 2027. Tkachuk has 10 points, with six goals and four assists, in his past four games after beginning his Panthers tenure without a point in five games. Florida have won three straight and are 5-2-2; Ottawa are 6-3-0. Drake Batherson said the friendship remains intact, while Dylan Cozens expects emotion and a physical game.

IHM Signal: A divisional meeting now carries the added weight of a former captain’s first return.

Coach Mark: Ottawa’s players expect emotion, but their comments also point to the need for composure in a game with important divisional points available.

Kindel stable after Penguins plane returns

The Pittsburgh Penguins said forward Ben Kindel is conscious, alert and in stable condition after the team plane returned to Salt Lake City shortly after take-off on Tuesday because of a medical episode. Team physician Dr Dharmest Vyas and the Penguins’ medical staff were on board and attended to the 19-year-old immediately. An ambulance was waiting when the aircraft returned to Salt Lake City International Airport, and Kindel was taken to the University of Utah Hospital for further evaluation. Pittsburgh had played the Utah Mammoth in Salt Lake City on Monday. The Penguins are scheduled to play the Florida Panthers at PPG Paints Arena in Pittsburgh on Thursday. The team said it would provide further updates when appropriate, while stressing the health, safety and privacy of its players and their families.

IHM Signal: The only confirmed update is that Kindel is stable and undergoing further evaluation.

Coach Mark: The Penguins’ stated focus is appropriately on Kindel’s evaluation, health and privacy rather than on hockey arrangements.

NHL Tonight set for 5,000th episode celebration

NHL Tonight will celebrate its 5,000th episode on Tuesday, Oct. 27, with a four-hour special beginning at 7 p.m. ET. The programme, longest-running signature show, began broadcasting from its Secaucus, New Jersey studios in October 2015. Original members of the Secaucus-based team Jamison Coyle, Tony Luftman, Mike Johnson, Mike Rupp and Kevin Weekes will anchor the special. It will include the programme’s regular in-depth analysis and live game look-ins, while revisiting memorable moments from its first 11 seasons in Secaucus and featuring special guests. Earlier programming on Oct. 27 will also pay tribute to the milestone: NHL Tonight: First Shift airs at 4 p.m. ET, followed by NHL Now at 5 p.m. ET. NHL chief media officer David Proper called the landmark a testament to those who have brought the programme to life.

IHM Signal: The 5,000th edition will pair a major broadcast milestone with the programme’s usual live hockey coverage.

Coach Mark: The expanded schedule makes the anniversary a full evening of NHL Network programming, not simply a single commemorative episode.

Benn six points from 1,000 with Dallas

Jamie Benn enters Dallas’s home game against the Boston Bruins on Tuesday six points short of 1,000 in the NHL. The 37-year-old Stars captain has 994 points, comprising 415 goals and 579 assists, in 1,260 games, all with Dallas. Selected by the Stars in the fifth round, No. 129, of the 2007 NHL Draft, Benn entered the League in 2009 and has been captain since the start of the 2013-14 season. He has one goal and one assist through eight games this season. Benn said changes to his summer work and the disappointment of last season’s first-round playoff exit had motivated him. He has adjusted his workout routine and lost weight to keep pace with younger players. His priority remains the Stanley Cup, after Dallas lost the 2019-20 Final to Tampa Bay in six games.

IHM Signal: A long-standing Dallas captain is within six points of a career milestone achieved entirely with one club.

Coach Mark: Benn’s focus on conditioning and team standards shows that the approaching milestone sits behind Dallas’s larger championship ambition.

Jacobsen-Derstine joins Ducks at Madison Square Garden

Colombe Jacobsen-Derstine attended the Anaheim Ducks‘ game against the New York Rangers at Madison Square Garden on Monday with her children, Xander and Delphine. Jacobsen-Derstine portrayed goaltender Julie “The Cat” Gaffney in the second and third films of the 1990s youth hockey trilogy. The family wore Ducks jerseys carrying the Gaffney nameplate. Delphine wore the original Team USA jersey used in the film, in the scene in which her mother’s character made the championship-winning save in the second instalment. Anaheim acknowledged the actress and her family in the building as the Ducks faced the Rangers. The visit brought a familiar Ducks character back to a game involving the club, with three generations represented by Jacobsen-Derstine and her two children.

IHM Signal: The Ducks’ New York visit included a family appearance tied to a familiar fictional goaltender in the club’s history.

Coach Mark: The original jersey and family presence gave the occasion a clear connection between the character’s hockey legacy and a current Ducks game.
