NHL IN 60 SECONDS
Trade and contract speculation is concentrating on defencemen, with Zach Whitecloud, Simon Edvinsson and Alexander Nikishin featuring in several reported scenarios. Calgary is reportedly exploring a Connor Zary trade while attracting interest in Whitecloud and Morgan Frost. Carolina’s Seth Jarvis has taken a significant recovery step by practising in a regular jersey, and Sean Walker’s pass helped Logan Stankoven begin his first NHL hat trick. Edmonton’s Evan Bouchard has driven an extraordinary four-game offensive opening, though the Oilers have also conceded 16 goals. Elsewhere, Aleksander Barkov expects a six-to-eight-week absence, while Boston still faces a difficult Pavel Zacha decision.
THE BIG FIVE
Laine remains available as Flyers assess blue-line options
Patrik Laine’s agent, Andy Scott, said Laine is skating every day, feels good and is ready to step in immediately. Calgary has discussed Laine internally but wants to assess its younger players at the start of the season. Detroit has spoken with Scott, although it has larger matters underway, while Seattle considered Laine earlier in the off-season before re-signing Bobby McMann and trading for Mackie Samoskevich. Unrestricted free agent David Perron, 38, is also seeking the right fit for himself and his family, with his agent saying he still wants to play. Philadelphia has been linked with a search for blue-line depth, with Luke Schenn, Justin Faulk and Zach Whitecloud listed as potential options.
IHM Signal: Laine and Perron remain unsigned, while Philadelphia’s reported blue-line search has several possible routes.
Coach Mark: For Philadelphia, adding depth on defence would provide insurance while it evaluates David Jiricek and Simon Benoit.

Calgary draws interest in Zary, Whitecloud and Frost
Connor Zary cleared waivers, and Calgary will continue exploring a trade, according to reports. Teams have shown interest, but some may require the Flames to take back salary because Zary carries a $3.75 million cap hit for each of the next two years. Zach Whitecloud is another player attracting calls. Toronto is reportedly seeking a defenceman of his type, and Montreal had interest last season. Whitecloud is 29, has one year remaining at a $2.75 million cap hit and has generated interest since his arrival from Vegas. Morgan Frost is also expected to draw attention during the season and has been described as a prime candidate to move at some point this year.
IHM Signal: Calgary’s trade discussions are shaped by both salary flexibility and demand for Whitecloud.
Coach Mark: Whitecloud’s veteran presence on a young blue line gives Calgary reason to weigh any return carefully.
Jarvis takes regular-jersey step in Hurricanes recovery
Seth Jarvis practised in a regular jersey for Carolina for the first time since off-season surgery on his right shoulder, describing it as his biggest step so far. The forward had surgery in June to repair a torn labrum and rotator cuff and was expected to need four to six months to recover, placing a return between late October and December. Jarvis said his shoulder feels good and that easing into contact is now the key stage. He was not set to play against Vancouver. Eric Robinson and William Carrier have each occupied Jarvis’s usual spot alongside Sebastian Aho and Andrei Svechnikov, with Aho recording seven points and Svechnikov four through four games.
IHM Signal: Jarvis has moved from a non-contact jersey into regular practice work, but remains unavailable.
Coach Mark: Carolina can preserve continuity around Aho and Svechnikov while Jarvis becomes comfortable with contact.

Walker’s pass starts Stankoven’s first NHL hat trick
Carolina defenceman Sean Walker delivered a precisely timed pass under a sliding Filip Hronek to set up Logan Stankoven’s opening goal of the night. Walker carried the puck up the right side on a two-on-one, and his pass found its way through the space between Hronek’s knee and skate, both on the ice. Stankoven completed his first NHL hat trick in the game and also reached 100 NHL points. The assist showcased Walker’s ability to find a passing lane even with the defender committed to taking away the obvious option. Stankoven then finished the chance and went on to score twice more.
IHM Signal: Walker’s pass created the opening goal in Stankoven’s milestone hat-trick performance.
Coach Mark: The play underlined the value of holding a two-on-one long enough to force the defender into a committed block.

Bouchard’s early production strengthens Norris case
Evan Bouchard has 11 points, including six goals and five assists, through Edmonton’s first four games. He is the second defenceman to reach 11 points through his team’s first four games of a season, after Harry Cameron recorded 14 for the Toronto Arenas in 1917-18. Bouchard leads the League with six goals and has three of the season’s six three-point games by defencemen. His 51.5 per cent offensive-zone time ranks in the 99th percentile, while his plus-46 five-on-five shot-attempt differential is second among NHL defencemen. Bouchard is also the only defenceman with at least 30 shot attempts, with 32, and averages 25:03 per game. Edmonton has nevertheless allowed 16 goals in four games.
IHM Signal: Bouchard’s scoring, possession numbers and workload have made his opening four games exceptional.
Coach Mark: Edmonton’s defensive task is to pair Bouchard’s territorial impact with fewer goals against during his heavy minutes.

Connor Hellebuyck remains suspended as Winnipeg seeks a trade solution, while Anaheim may look for a veteran defenceman deeper into trade season.
Flames hold firm on Whitecloud as Wright is assessed
Calgary is not believed to be in a hurry to move Zach Whitecloud, whose veteran role on a very young blue line could elevate the asking price. Seattle’s Shane Wright wants greater responsibility.
Seattle has interest in Simon Edvinsson, but Detroit has told teams it wants to re-sign him rather than trade him, according to reports.

Panthers dismiss Larkin talk as Laine interest persists
Reports say there was little validity to speculation linking Dylan Larkin with Florida, with Aleksander Barkov expected out six to eight weeks. Florida also wants to extend Brady Tkachuk this season.
Calgary and Detroit have considered Patrik Laine, while Winnipeg’s performance could affect urgency and the requested return in a Connor Hellebuyck trade.
Barkov targets return as soon as possible
Aleksander Barkov expects to miss six to eight weeks with a lower-body injury but said he feels good and plans to return as soon as possible. He wore a left knee brace at a Boca Raton event.
Barkov missed last season after reconstructive surgery on his right knee and was playing only his second game this season when injured.

Bruins still weighing Zacha’s future
Boston and Pavel Zacha’s camp have continued extension discussions, though reports say they have not been close over the past three months. Other teams have called Boston to check on the situation.
Zacha is a pending unrestricted free agent, and Boston could retain him as its own rental if it remains in the playoff race.
Colorado and Minnesota set the early pace
Colorado leads the Super 16 rankings after beginning 2-1-0, helped by a 40.0 per cent power play through three games. Minnesota, at 2-0-1, sits second.
The Wild have allowed five goals in three games, while Jesper Wallstedt has stopped 70 of 75 shots for a .933 save percentage.
IHM NHL PULSE
Blue-line market dominates the early rumour cycle
Defence is the repeated theme across the trade reports. Whitecloud is drawing attention from Toronto and other clubs, Philadelphia has been linked to depth options, Montreal defenders are reportedly being watched, and Edvinsson’s possible availability has prompted discussion around several teams. Nikishin’s reported contract expectations add another high-cost blue-line decision to the landscape.
Salary structure is shaping the conversations
Cap commitments are central to several reported situations. Zary’s $3.75 million cap hit is said to be complicating trade discussions, while Whitecloud’s $2.75 million figure is part of his appeal. Nikishin’s reported $9 million cap-hit request, Rielly’s $7.5 million cap hit and any future Zacha deal all illustrate how teams must balance acquisition cost with contract obligations.
Carolina combines recovery news with attacking production
Jarvis has advanced into a regular practice jersey as he recovers from shoulder surgery, while Walker and Stankoven supplied a memorable attacking sequence. Aho and Svechnikov have also started strongly in Jarvis’s usual line spot.
Early performance is already influencing roster focus
Bouchard’s offensive and possession numbers have placed him in an early Norris conversation, while Minnesota’s defensive start and Colorado’s revived power play have driven strong early ranking positions.
